Map of Minneapolis Speed Cameras Pilot Program

The City of Minneapolis has announced the installation of five automated speed enforcement cameras as part of a new Vision Zero initiative to curb dangerous driving and improve pedestrian safety. The pilot program will begin in September 2025 with a 30-day warning period before issuing real citations in October.

🚦 How the Minneapolis Speed Cameras Work

Each speed camera uses radar and image sensors to detect vehicles traveling above the speed limit. If a car is going more than 10 mph over the posted speed, the camera captures the license plate and issues a citation to the registered owner. Fines are structured as follows:

  • $40 for speeds 10+ mph over the limit
  • $80 for speeds 20+ mph over the limit

Unlike some states, these violations won’t add points to your license, and the owner may contest the fine if they were not the driver.

🛡️ Privacy Measures

To comply with a 2007 Minnesota Supreme Court ruling, the cameras will only record vehicles and license plates—not the faces of drivers or passengers. This ensures the system focuses on vehicle-based accountability.  Here is a map of cameras in Minnesota

📊 Why It Matters

Speeding was a factor in over 40 fatal crashes in Minneapolis between 2022 and 2024. Cities that have implemented speed cameras have seen a 65%+ reduction in speeding violations near the monitored zones. The Minneapolis program aims to reduce traffic deaths without relying on stretched police resources.

🔮 What's Next?

  • September 2025: 30-day warning period begins
  • October 2025: Real citations start
  • 2026 Expansion: The city may add up to 11 more cameras if the program proves successful
