All 170 school buses in the Syracuse City School District will now have cameras installed to capture images of vehicles that fail to stop when students are loading and unloading.
The Syracuse Common Council unanimously approved a partnership with Jenoptik North America to implement speed and red light enforcement devices in school zones, along with stop arm cameras on all district school buses.
The city of Syracuse is introducing technology for speed and red light enforcement in school zones. Red light cameras will be set up at 36 intersections near schools to catch drivers who run red lights, while 34 speed cameras will monitor all school zones in the district to enforce speed limits.
Violations will result in tickets being sent to the registered owner of the vehicle caught by the camera. Those caught by red light cameras face a $50 fine, with an additional possible $25 surcharge for not responding to the ticket.
Violators of school zone speed limits, caught traveling 10 miles per hour or more above the posted limit, will receive a $50 fine, with a possible $25 surcharge for non-response.
Jenoptik will collect these fines to cover the costs of installing, operating, and maintaining the technology, with no expense to taxpayers.
The contract will span five years, with an option to renew for another five years, subject to approval by Mayor Ben Walsh and the Common Council.
