Speed safety cameras have been proven effective in curbing excessive speeding and reducing severe and fatal traffic collisions. With the passage of AB 645, San Francisco can now implement this life-saving technology to combat speeding on our streets.

Why is San Francisco installing speed safety cameras? Unsafe speed is a leading cause of collisions resulting in injuries in San Francisco. Speeding reduces a driver's visibility and reaction time, making it harder to avoid accidents and navigate curves safely. The likelihood of survival in a crash is significantly affected by vehicle speed.
How many speed cameras are coming to San Francisco? San Francisco will deploy 33 speed safety camera systems, in accordance with state law proportional to the city's population.
Where will the speed cameras be located? Cameras will be placed on high-injury streets, school zones, and areas with a history of sideshows, particularly on the High Injury Network, which represents 12% of streets but accounts for over 68% of severe traffic injuries or fatalities.
Map of recommended SF Speed Camera locations include:
What speed will trigger a violation? A speeding violation will be triggered if a vehicle exceeds the posted speed limit by 11 miles per hour or more. Violation notifications will be sent to the registered owner within two weeks.
When will the cameras be operational? The cameras will start issuing violations in 2025. Before activation, several steps must be completed, including finalizing data collection, securing project approvals, selecting a vendor, and conducting a public education campaign. The first two months after activation will issue warning notices, followed by fines for speeding vehicles.
