AMBER Alert Cameras

GATSO USA Introduces Industry's First AMBER Alert Photo Enforcement Camera -- Helping Police Stop Child Abductions. Camera's AMBER Alert Feature Can Drastically Increase Chances of Locating Abducted Children During Crucial First Minutes of Search.

The camera's AMBER Alert feature enables police departments to search in real time for wanted or suspect vehicles at intersections or locations within a city's network of compatible red light or speed photo enforcement cameras. When a suspect vehicle passes a camera location, the camera immediately reports the information back to the police department.

This is a very interesting application and "spin" on the use of the red light camera technology and probably will spur further adoption because it reduces the friction between a city councils and citizens. The AMBER Alert™ Program is a voluntary partnership between law-enforcement agencies, broadcasters, transportation agencies, and the wireless industry, to activate an urgent bulletin in the most serious child-abduction cases. The goal of an AMBER Alert is to instantly galvanize the entire community to assist in the search for and the safe recovery of the child.

iPhone GPS Warning Applications

We have started to see a few iPhone applications that will remain nameless that are using data from our site without credit or permission. The first thing you should ask when purchasing or using an application that references anything that has been Photo Enforced is where did you obtain the data for your application? I would suspect that we might see some healthy discussion on this issue because of the complexity of the issues. PhotoEnforced.com was the first U.S. database to hit the web back in 2001 when there were only a few hundred cameras in operation. Our open database has grown to 6,000 locations and continues to grow about 30% per year.

If you are going to use the data provided and charge for it we are entitled to a piece of your revenue. If you intend to give it away for free we would ask that you please give PhotoEnforced.com credit as the source of your information. Our business model remains advertising and licensing based to a few select businesses.

Photo Enforcement of Overweight and Overheight Trucks

American Traffic Solutions' (ATS') newest photo enforcement technology is designed to help cities solve the problems associated with overweight and "overheight" trucks.

Trucks that violate cities' height and weight restrictions cause municipalities millions of dollars in damage and repair costs to local streets. These same vehicles generate myriad complaints from neighbors about unwanted and irritating truck traffic noise. The New York City Department of Transportation just completed a pilot program testing ATS' new technology that uses photo enforcement to detect and potentially cite trucks that violate height and weight rules.

ATS' Axsis(TM) WIM-300 (Weight-in-Motion) system uses a combination of quartz weight-sensitive sensors embedded in the road and a roadside system that automatically monitors and isolates heavy vehicles. The sensors "read" the weight of a vehicle and can detect an overweight vehicle. Similarly, the Axsis(TM) Overheight photo enforcement system uses a laser to measure the vehicle's height and detect violations. Images and video clips of the offending vehicles are captured similar to red-light and speed camera images. Images and data are transmitted to an ATS Data Center for enforcement. The photographic evidence is reviewed by the local police agency before citations are mailed to violators.

ATS Sues Redflex

A lawsuit filed by a rival accuses a leading speed enforcement company of competing illegally by using radar units that lacked required government certification, an issue the rival first raised during bidding for a major Arizona contract. The lawsuit alleged that Redflex competed for photo enforcement contracts and delivered radar units to service those contracts while knowingly lacking Federal Communications Commission certifications for several imported radar types. ATS said it was damaged by misrepresentations and unfair competition by Redflex through its use of uncertified radar that ATS said made Redflex ineligible for contracts in Arizona and other states.

The two companies were rivals for an Arizona contract awarded to Redflex for a speed enforcement program now being launched initially in the Phoenix area with mobile and fixed cameras. The mobile units use radar to trigger cameras. The fixed cameras use pavement-embedded senors. The lawsuit is the latest legal spat over the lucrative state contract which gives Redflex Traffic Systems up to $28.75 out of every $165 paid to the state for motorists caught speeding by any of the 100 fixed and mobile cameras being set up. The contract is believed worth about $20 million a year to Redflex.

Rental Car Camera Tickets

I would be curious to get feedback on users who have received red light camera tickets while driving a rental car. As I understand the situation a typical vehicle's registration is tied to a business and therefore the ticket would be sent to the registered address. If the rental agency is sophisticated enough to correlate when the ticket was received and which customer had the vehicle you might receive a forwarded ticket in the mail. However, my intuition says that most rental agencies are not administratively equipped to handle the photo enforced ticket processing and most municipalities cannot verify the driver. If ticket technicians cannot verify the pictured driver is not the registered owner by (gender or age) the ticket is usually discarded in my opinion.
