City Council gave the approval to the state Legislature to pass a three-year extension and expansion of New York City’s speed camera program.
Speed cameras are placed in school zones to photograph speeding vehicles. They now operate daily 24/7, year-round.
If your car is caught speeding by a speed camera, you will be sent a Notice of Liability (NOL) in about 14 days. The fine is $50.
According to Mayor Eric Adams, state lawmakers and municipal leaders secured a deal on Thursday to make speed cameras in New York City active 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Adams said in a statement late Thursday evening that new legislation has been proposed in the state Legislature that will allow speed cameras to monitor "dangerous reckless driving" across the five boroughs 24 hours a day.
State law now requires cameras to be turned off between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., as well as on weekends.
"Make no mistake about it, this is a tremendous victory for New Yorkers that will save lives and help stem the flow of traffic violence that has claimed the lives of far too many," Adams said.
"We're investing a record $900 million in roadway safety and revamping 1,000 crossings across the city - but we can't do it alone, and my team and I have been working closely with our Albany partners to get this done for months."
According to Transportation Alternatives' estimate of traffic deaths in 2020, approximately 40% of non-highway traffic fatalities happened in speed safety camera zones during the hours when they were not active.
According to data released to NY1 by Transportation Alternatives, 81 New Yorkers were murdered in traffic crashes as of May 2022, a 19 percent increase over the same period in 2021.
According to a news release from Adams' office, speed cameras have been shown to be beneficial in reducing speeding behavior, with the majority of vehicles receiving one penalty not receiving a second in 2021.
According to the mayor's office, speeding at camera locations during operating hours was decreased by an average of 72 percent as of December 2020. When the cameras were switched off in 2018, one in every three deaths or major injuries happened.
