New Haven, Connecticut Proposed Red Light Cameras

New Haven looks to be the first city in CT to activate certain traffic safety cameras

In April 2024, New Haven, Connecticut is poised to potentially become the first city in the state to implement red light cameras. Mayor Justin Elicker has proposed an ordinance to the Board of Alders for the installation of 19 cameras at busy intersections. During the initial 30 days, the cameras will issue warnings. Following the first violation, drivers will be fined $50, with subsequent violations incurring a $75 penalty.

Sources from Yale Daily News report that New Haven is moving forward with plans to install both red light and speed cameras, with Mayor Justin Elicker advocating for the measure. Pending approval by the Board of Alders, the plan would introduce 19 cameras at key locations across the city.

Once approved, the installation of these traffic enforcement cameras will require final authorization from the state Department of Transportation. This initiative is facilitated by a recent state law that empowers municipalities to deploy such technology. The revenue generated by these cameras, as per state law, can be utilized to enhance transportation infrastructure or fund automated traffic enforcement.

There have been concerns raised about the potential disproportionate impact of these cameras on residents of inner-city neighborhoods.
